He stated, I went to market to buy some fish and vegetables with my mother. We were walking on the side of the road (Galle Road from Colombo to Galle). Traffic was unusually heavy. I thought there must be an accident on the road ahead. Suddenly there was a big panic. Everyone was shouting and running. We also got frighten and started running back towards home, but it was too late. As soon as we turned, we got hit by a huge wave and sank. I was in the water for a long time and could not come out. I thought I was dying. I was still under water when my mother grabbed me and pulled me out. I dont know how long we were in the water. We kept rolling. It was like diving in the sea, only waves were far stronger. (photo)

Satellite photo of the Rub al Khali desert - Rub 'al Khali desert seen from space - Rub al-Khali (the Empty Quarter), is one of the largest deserts and the largest uninterrupted expanse of sand in the world. It covers nearly 600,000 square kilometres in the Arabian Peninsula, located mostly in Saudi Arabia and in the territories of Yemen, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The image obtained by the Landsat-7 satellite on 26 August 2001 shows the sand dune fields separated by flat and saline stretches, sebkha (or sabkha). The Arabian Peninsula's Empty Quarter, known as Rub 'al Khali, is the world's largest sand sea, holding about half as much sand as the Sahara Desert. The Empty Quarter covers 583,000 square kilometers (225,000 square miles), and stretches over parts of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Galle Town, shop in Old Market. More often than not, I see myself using a camera purely as a tool to record things and people that interest me. I honestly see very little 'creative' input going in! This is a perfect example - an old traditional Curd and Honey shop in the south of the country. The curd is stored in folded palm fronds and hung from the ceiling. The fresh curd comes in each day in terracotta pots - to be used once and the thrown away. Nothing for sale in this shop is imported - local products, look out for the drums suspended from the ceiling. The bottles on the counter contain bees honey and the wrapped balls contain 'jaggery', a hardened treacle which serves a sugar. Today, nearly all the small shops around the country have shelves filled with products produced by the big multinationals, the local shops have nearly disappeared. After twenty years of taking pictures, I more and more discover how the passage of time adds to the interest of a simple image, Sri Lanka. (pho

Etna, on the island of Sicily. The volcano's thermal signature was detected by MODIS and is marked with a red overlay. On the northern slopes of the volcano, the thermal signature is possibly a second lava flow. A dense plume of what is likely ash and smoke is streaming southward from the volcano and out over the Mediterranean Sea. According to news reports, at least two lava flows were still streaming down the summit's flanks as of Monday, October 28, but the flows had not come far enough down the mountain to affect any towns or villages. NGC 104, better known as 47 Tucanae, is the second largest and second brightest globular cluster in the skies, outshone only by another southern globular, Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). The snow - capped, crescent - shaped Alps and Italy's Apennines mountain chain are shown in this Envisat image. Snowfall in early winter - for meteorologists winter begins on the 1 December - covered the whole mountain areas with fresh snow, while the lower lands in the south and north of the mountains remained snow - free. This wide angle image includes Horologium, Phoenix and Pictor, insignificant constellations roughly centred on an arc of delination 50* south, but at a scale too small to show the star identifications and stick figures. Horologium, the Pendulum Clock (originally l'Horloge and then Horologium Oscillitorium), was a constellation introduced by Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his stay at the Cape of Good Hope between 1751 and 1752. It was named to honor Christian Huygens as the inventor of this type of clock, but the idea for such a method of regulating time came from Galileo. Lacaille's constellation drawing shows a remarkably detailed dial, weights and a pendulum that has little apparent connection with the scattering of faint stars in this part of the sky. There are no named stars and little else in
