Scientists are monitoring this near area because they are concerned about the possibility that the winds may push the Black Marea of the Gulf of Mexico (visible west of Florida) south into the Loop Current “or that the current may extend northward to reach the oil slick. If oil from this slick were to penetrate into the Loop Current, it could be drained towards the Florida Keys archipelago (this set of circular islands associated with coral reefs off the tip of Florida) and further east to the Gulf Stream. By combining sea surface state and current circulation information with Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data on black maree, analysts are able to determine in which direction the limits of the oil slick can move.
