Florida seen by Envisat - Florida seen from space - This image taken by Envisat shows Florida Detroit through which the Loop Current “” flows eastward out of the Gulf of Mexico before joining the “Gulf Stream” which passes off the western coast of the United States and Newfoundland (not visible here). Scientists are monitoring this near area because they are concerned about the possibility that the winds may push the Black Marea of the Gulf of Mexico (visible west of Florida) south into the Loop Current “or that the current may extend northward to reach the oil slick. If oil from this slick were to penetrate into the Loop Current, it could be drained towards the Florida Keys archipelago (this set of circular islands associated with coral reefs off the tip of Florida) and further east to the Gulf Stream. By combining sea surface state and current circulation information with Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data on black maree, analysts are able to determine in which direction the limits of the oil slick can move. The Bahamas (lower right) is a string of islands, sandbanks and shoals stretching 1,400 km between Florida and Hispaniola Island. All these islands are surrounded by coral reefs. About 5% of the total coral reefs of the planet are concentrated in this area. The other States of the United States visible in the image are Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
