This system consists of two collision galaxies seen by the slice. Their nuclei are approximately 50,000 light years away. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 30 October 2001. NGC 6670 is a gorgeous pair of overlapping edge - on galaxies. Scientists believe that NGC 6670 has already experienced at least one close encounter and is now in the early stages of a second. The nuclei of the two galaxies are approximately 50,000 light - years apart. NGC 6670 glows in the infrared with more than a hundred billion times the luminosity of our Sun and is thought to be entering a starburst phase. Located 60 million years ago - light, it belongs to the cluster of galaxies of the Furnace. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. NGC 1365, the largest spiral in the southern constellation of Fornax, is located at a distance of about 60 million light years. This beautiful galaxy is about as massive as the Milky Way, itself a substantial galaxy. Not much is known about how galaxies take on their beautiful forms, but a good deal is known about their internal organisation. The obvious 'bar' has the nucleus of the galaxy at its hub and is surrounded by masses of cooler stars that appear yellow on colour photographs. The bar itself is also yellowish, and has distinct dust lanes but it terminates abruptly in slender, curved arms that are lit by blue stars and the pink star - forming regions from which they spring

Nebula NGC 6164 - 5 in the Rule - The emission nebula NGC 6164 - 65 - This nebula is located about 4000 years - light from Earth. It is a bipolar nebula around a very hot star at the end of life, the star HD 148937. NGC 6164 - 65 is a bipolar nebula surrounding the peculiar O 7f star HD 148937. Although the nebula was believed initially to represent a planetary nebula, it is now understood to represent a shell - like ejected nebula, formed by the winds of its young central star. Wind blown nebulae are usually considered the outcome of Wolf - Rayet type stars (WR), evolved O - type stars that have left the main sequence, molding their surroundings by way of fierce stellar winds. In the case of the S - shaped bipolar nebula NGC 6164 - 65, the central star is not a WR star, but a young O - type supergiant of 40 solar masses. Relatively few examples of such objects are known to exist, making NGC 6164 - 5 particularly unique. The true age of the star is not known although estimates of its a

Nebula NGC 6164 - 5 in the Rule - The emission nebula NGC 6164 - 65 - This nebula is located about 4000 years - light from Earth. It is a bipolar nebula around a very hot star at the end of life, the star HD 148937. NGC 6164 - 65 is a bipolar nebula surrounding the peculiar O 7f star HD 148937. Although the nebula was believed initially to represent a planetary nebula, it is now understood to represent a shell - like ejected nebula, formed by the winds of its young central star. Wind blown nebulae are usually considered the outcome of Wolf - Rayet type stars (WR), evolved O - type stars that have left the main sequence, molding their surroundings by way of fierce stellar winds. In the case of the S - shaped bipolar nebula NGC 6164 - 65, the central star is not a WR star, but a young O - type supergiant of 40 solar masses. It is home to a cluster of young stars NGC 6193, formed three million years ago. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Here we see two bright stars whose radiant energy is beating down on to the surface of a dark cloud, very similar to the Horsehead in Orion. The cloud itself is opaque and because of that, very cold inside. These conditions are ideal for the formation of organic molecules on the surfaces of the chilled dust particles. The opacity of the cloud protects the fragile molecules within from the energetic radiation of nearby stars, but as its surface is gradually warmed and eroded, the delicate organic molecules are destroyed and the hydrogen released glows as a distinctive red emission nebula

Since then it has faded and is today about 1000 times fainter than it was at its brightest as the nebula it created during its outburst has cooled and become opaque. The whole region around Eta Carinae is rich in hot stars of which Eta is an extreme example and it is their combined radiation that produces the spectacular Carina nebula that dominates this picture. The nebula and its peculiar star are about 8000 light years away

This wide angle image includes Horologium, Phoenix and Pictor, insignificant constellations roughly centred on an arc of delination 50* south, but at a scale too small to show the star identifications and stick figures. Horologium, the Pendulum Clock (originally l'Horloge and then Horologium Oscillitorium), was a constellation introduced by Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his stay at the Cape of Good Hope between 1751 and 1752. It was named to honor Christian Huygens as the inventor of this type of clock, but the idea for such a method of regulating time came from Galileo. Lacaille's constellation drawing shows a remarkably detailed dial, weights and a pendulum that has little apparent connection with the scattering of faint stars in this part of the sky. There are no named stars and little else in
