Satellite photo of the Rub al Khali desert - Rub 'al Khali desert seen from space - Rub al-Khali (the Empty Quarter), is one of the largest deserts and the largest uninterrupted expanse of sand in the world. It covers nearly 600,000 square kilometres in the Arabian Peninsula, located mostly in Saudi Arabia and in the territories of Yemen, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The image obtained by the Landsat-7 satellite on 26 August 2001 shows the sand dune fields separated by flat and saline stretches, sebkha (or sabkha). The Arabian Peninsula's Empty Quarter, known as Rub 'al Khali, is the world's largest sand sea, holding about half as much sand as the Sahara Desert. James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - JWST Set for Testing in Space Simulation Chamber: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in front of the empty chamber door of Nasa's Johnson Space Center. He'll be locked up for a series of tests. The JWST will replace the Hubble Space Telescope in 2018. Equipped with a 6.5 m mirror, he will observe the universe mainly in infrared. 25 May 2017. Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope sits in front of the door to Chamber A, a giant thermal vacuum chamber located at Nasa's Johnson Space Center. The telescope will soon be moved into the chamber, where it will spend a hot Houston summer undergoing tests at sub-freezing cryogenic temperatures. The telescope will operate at an extremely cold 39 K (-234* C or -389* F) in space, so NASA is simulating those conditions on the ground, ensuring the optics and instruments will perform perfectly after launch. May 25 2017.

Hubble space telescope: 4th maintenance mission 05/2009 - Hubble space telescope: fourth repair mission 05/2009 - Astronauts John Grunsfeld (on the robotic arm of the shuttle) and Andrew Feustel (foreground) during the fifth and last extravehicular exit to maintain the Hubble space telescope (HST). 18 May 2009. Astronaut John Grunsfeld, STS - 125 mission specialist, positioned on a foot restraint on the end of Atlantis' remote manipulator system (RMS), and astronaut Andrew Feustel (foreground), mission specialist, participate in the mission's fifth and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues to refurbish and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. During the seven - hour and two - minute spacewalk, Grunsfeld and Feustel installed a battery group replacement, removed and replaced a Fine Guidance Sensor and three thermal blankets (NOBL) protecting Hubble's electronics. 18 May 2009
