Image description

Former hostages (L-R) Werner Wallert of Germany (57), South African couple Monique and Carel Strydom, Lebanese-born French Maria Moarbes, French TV journalist Maryse Burgo and French Sonia Wendling pose for a group picture at the Bab Alaziziyah army camp in the Libyan capital Tripoli, August 29, 2000 after Libya reportedly paid millions of dollars to free the hostages. [The Bab Alaziziyah camp was bombed by U.S.and British war planes killing 38 Libyans on April 15, 1986, following a Libyan blast at the Berlin discotheque "La Belle".] The former hostages were kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim rebel group, from a Malaysian diving resort on April 23. Four Westerners and 12 Filipinos are still held in the jungle on a remote Philippine island.
