Combined sports team, 1st Battalion, 15th Punjab Regiment, 1937. Photograph, India, 1937. The 1st Battalion 15th Punjab Regiment was raised in June 1857 to assist with the quelling of the Indian uprising of that year. The regiment saw service in many subsequent campaigns including several on the North West Frontier as well as Mesopotamia in the First World War. This photograph was taken at the end of the particularly successful sporting season of 1936-1937 when the battalion sports team won both the Kohat District Shield and the Kohat District Championship Shield. The latter prize displayed here was awarded for the best overall performance at hockey, tug-of-war, cross-country running, football and athletics and so reflects the achievement of the whole team.
