Othmar Schoeck, 1943 (b/w photo)

The Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, who premiered his operas in Nazi Germany until 1943, at the piano (picture from 1941). During the Nazi era, Swiss theatres welcomed many anti-fascist emigrants and upheld values such as freedom and democracy. On the other hand, Swiss theatre people maintained contacts with the Third Reich until 1944. This is shown by the first results of a National Fund project whose interim report was published in Bern on 13 March 1997. The study is to be concluded with a publication in 1998.
