On the middle voting poster designed by Hans Erni in 1947, a pensioner leans against a young worker to advertise for the AHV. Fifty years ago, on July 6, 1947, the Swiss people overwhelmingly approved the law on old-age and survivors' insurance (AHV). In 1960 the AHV was supplemented by disability insurance (IV). The introduction of old-age and survivors' insurance was a central demand of the 1918 state general strike. Although a corresponding amendment to the federal constitution was adopted in the referendum in 1925, the implementation law failed in the referendum of 1931.
