Tomb of Kaemankh (photo)

Kaiemankh constructed his tomb in the Western Cemetery in one of the north-south streets between the older tombs. In his time, during the Sixth Dynasty, part of this street was already taken over by other officials. Detail of the south wall shows the papyrus plants and a variety of birds and butterflies in bright colors. Papyrus plants are associated with the Nile Delta. In its marshes legend says that the goddess Isis gave birth to her son, Horus, and protected him from the evil of Seth. The papyrus plant was also used as a hieroglyph meaning “green” and “fresh.” It had a strong funerary symbolism since the primeval marsh was the source of all life, both in this world and the afterlife. The animals living in this marsh confirm its life energy.
