The Church of Chesme, on the outskirts of the capital, was built by Yury Felten (1730–1801) to a commission by Catherine the Great commemorating the victory of the Russian fleet over the Ottomans at the bay of Chesme in March 1770. The jewel-like delicacy of the structure was so admired that 2 replicas were built elsewhere in the Empire. It is close to a palace of the same name, and a small cemetery for war veterans and Knights of the Order of St George.
