The Last Supper

Oil painting on poplar panel, The Last Supper, by Puccio di Simone (fl.1345-1365) (Master of the Fabriano Altarpiece), inscribed: HOC OPVS FACIT FIERI DOMINA GIOVANNA VXOR OLIM GIANNI DE BARDIS PRO REMEDIO ANTIME ISSIVS GIANNI MAGISTER IOCTI DE FLORENTIA.Our Lord, distinguished by the blue mantle which He wears, is seated at the left end of a long table, with St John kneeling before Him, resting his head on His lap; other disciples are seated along the far side of the table, which is covered by a white cloth. The moment depicted is when Christ has spoken the words 'But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.' The reaction of Judas is to raise his hands in protest. Offner points out that the halo of St. Peter is incomplete and that the picture may have had a narrow strip removed from the top and left. Upton House, Warwickshire (Accredited Museum)
