A Street Scene in Taxila, AD 260. For quite a thousand years Takshasila, better known by its Greek name Taxila, was the greatest city in North West India, through Hindu and Buddhist times, from the days of Darius, 500 BC, to at least 500 AD. It is now represented by extensive ruins not far from Peshawar. The scene here shows it in its later days, when it was a stronghold of Buddhism, dominated by its great "tope," its ancient fort, and the neighbouring Himalayas.
