Image description

from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Cawnpore to Mohumdy Vol. IV' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r.1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15. Lucknow, the capital for the Nawabs of Awadh, was visited by Lord Moira in 1814. This view shows the party entering the city of Lucknow on elephant back on October 18th, 1814, with the palace of Shuja al-Daula on the left, the mosque of Asaf al-Daula's Imambara in the middle, and the latter Nawab's stone bridge over the Gumti on the right. Inscribed below: 'Entrance into Lucknow with a view of the Paunch Mahl.'
