On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Duke Lane. Crown Inn. Turn left into Muckles' Gate. Billy Sayle's own gable (with lamp). Mammy Law's eating house, (with barbers pole), and Mother Pratt's in right centre. Duke Lane, with swinging sign of the 'Crown Inn', licensed continuously since 1826. Typical of the old town streets. The presence in it of a Corporation dust-cart today entirely blocks pedestrian traffic."
