In 1874 he led an expedition sent to Saint Paul Island (Indian Ocean) to observe Venus's passage before the Sun. From 1878 to 1892 he directed the Paris Observatory. In 1887, he was the promoter of the “Map of Heaven”, a project to draw up the photographic map of the whole sky, bringing together 18 observatories around the world.
