McLea, Duncan Fraser A large three-masted ship is being towed out to sea from the Tyne in this evening scene. The river is crowded with other sailing ships, together with steam ships and tugs. The two white towers of the lighthouses at North Shields can be seen on the right. Ships used these to navigate a safe course, avoiding the treacherous sandbanks and rocks. On the left, at South Shields, is the Groyne light, built in 1884, which can still be seen today. Duncan McLea had been a sailor before becoming an artist in North Shields.
