Rudolf Augstein, founder, publisher, and chief editor of the German weekly news magazine 'Der Spiegel', arrives at a police office for a questioning by the Prosecutor's Office, Hamburg, 27 October 1962. An article by reporter Conrad Ahlers on the insufficient state of the German army published on 8 October had led to the searching and sealing off of Spiegel offices by federal police and to arrest warrants on suspicion of treason for Augstein and others. Augstein was detained for 104 days and released in February 1963. The case was finally dropped in May 1965 after the accusations proved unfounded. Defense Minister Franz-Josef Strauss lost his office in November 1962. The so called 'Spiegel Affair' was the first big domestic crisis in the Federal Republic of Germany.
