Renault taxi type AG, 1910. The first motor taxi to be built in large numbers, this was one of the earliest commercial applications of the motor vehicle. The taxi was introduced in Paris in 1906 and in London a year later. By 1910 there were more motor taxis than horse-drawn cabs in London. La Compagnie Francaise des Automobiles de Place ordered 250 Renaults in 1905 and by June 1909 had ordered a further 2500, enabling the costs to be reduced. This example was used at Hove Station, East Sussex, from 1910 until the 1930s. ©SSPL/Science Museum
