Image title
On 27 March 2003 in Afghanistan, women wearing 'burqas' wait with their children and their belongings near two large trucks at an encashment centre for returning refugees set up by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) in Pul-e-Charkhi, on the outskirts of Kabul, the capital. They have travelled from neighbouring Pakistan via hired lorry and are now preparing to continue on to their homes. The UNHCR facility offers returning families a basic travel allowance, parcels of wheat, and non-food items such as blankets and farming tools. UNICEF maintains a booth at the facility, immunizing arriving children against measles and polio, and providing information on the dangers of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) and the importance of schooling for children. So far this year, some 3,300 Afghans have returned home from Pakistan. An estimated 1.8 million refugees, mostly from Pakistan, returned to Afghanistan in 2002. (photo)
