Medicine Containers, Chests Two medicine chests used by explorers, late 19th-early 20th century. The larger of these two medicine chests,was used by Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) in Antarctica. Scott left London on 1st June 1910 bound for the South Pole. He reached the South Pole on 17th January 1912, only to discover that the Norwegian expedition under Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found by a search party eight months later. The other chest was used by Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) and Dr David Livingstone (1813-1873) in Africa. Stanley was sent to Africa in 1869 to locate Livingstone, missing on an earlier expedition, successfully finding him alive in 1871. ©SSPL/Science Museum
