Medicine Containers, Chests Two medicine chests, belonging to polar explorers, early 20th century. Two medicine chests, belonging to polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, (1871-1922) and Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912). The chest on the right is from Scotts 1910 expedition, which left London on 1st June bound for the South Pole. He reached the Pole on 17th January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Shackleton led the Imperial Transatlantic Expedition which set off in 1914. Their ship, the Endurance, was crushed by ice, forcing Shackleton to undertake an epic 800 mile voyage to South Georgia in a small boat to summon rescue. ©SSPL/Science Museum
