Professor Lankester was director of the Natural History Museum in London (1898-1907), hence the title: 'His religion is the worship of all sorts of winged and finny freaks'. His contributions to zoology include important work in the fields of embryology and protozoology. He became president of the Marine Biological Association in 1892, and was knighted 1907.
