Counties, Gloucestershire 'Gloucester Cathedral, the Lavatorium', c 1880. A photographic view of part of the Cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral, published by Francis Bedford & Co. The impressive ceiling of the cloisters is a complete circuit of traceried fan vaulting dating from the late fourteenth century. Here, in the north walk of the cloisters is the lavatorium, the monks communal washing area, with running water piped from a nearby spring. The cloisters were also used as a location for the 'Harry Potter' films. Bedford (1816-1894) was a prolific and well-respected photographer, best known for his numerous topographic and architectural views of Britain. He was assisted by his son, William (1846-1893) whose work is almost indistinguishable from that of his father. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
