Image description

The little Sardinian drummer. On the facade of a farmhouse near Custoza they have recently discovered a plaque. He says that the drummer from a Piedmontese ward fell from one of those windows, to go for help, who was stuck in the house on the eve of the historic battle that decided the war of 1866. Although wounded in the leg, the boy still managed to reach our lines and save his comrades. Then they had to amputate his injured leg. This is one of the most moving stories of the Heart by Edmondo De Amicis and now that plaque has come to give consistency of reality to the figure of the young hero. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 18 July 1954.
