Gladstone, (1809-1898), ex-British Prime Minister and leader of the Whigs party, pulling a cracker with Robert Cecil, 3rd Marquess Salisbury, Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative party, who sought to fight Home Rule "with kindness". Out of the cracker bursts a cherub dressed in a sash 1888. Below the cherub falls a banner "England's and Scotland's turn", along with two items "Sugar" and "Fair Trade". In the background, an Irish terrorist with "1887" labelled on his coat, slinks off.
