Captain Sir William Peel had first distinguished himself fighting the Russians in the Crimean War (1854-1856) during which he won the Victoria Cross. During the India Mutiny (1857-1859) the heavy guns of Peels Naval Brigade, made up of sailors from HMS Shannon, played an important part in the capture of Lucknow. Peel was badly injured by a musket ball during the taking of the city and died later the same year of smallpox.
