The Administrative Commission of the Marcel Benoist Foundation for the Promotion of Scientific Research, meeting under the chairmanship of German President Philipp Etter, has awarded Otto Robert Gsell (1902-1990), Chief Physician of the Medical Department of the Kantonsspital St. Gallen, in recognition of his completed research on leptospirosis. In October 1953 Philipp Etter, left, hands over the prize to Otto Robert Gsell, right. taken in October 1952 in Switzerland. He discovered the cause of swine herder disease and introduced sulphathiazoles (sulphonamides) into the treatment of infectious diseases. Recorded in October 1952 in Switzerland
