Image description

India's famed "toy train", running on a two-foot wide narrow guage track, prepares to leave Ghum station on its way to the Himalayan town of Darjeeling June 10. Ghum, at an altitude of 2,257 metres (7,450 feet) is the highest station along the railway which is one of the highest altitude railway lines on earth. The train, hauled by a 19th century engine consists of three small coaches and runs from the plains of east India to Darjeeling at an altitude of 6,812 feet. The "toy train" takes almost nine hours to clamber along a distance of just 88 kilometres (55 miles) and is a popular tourist attraction in the hill resorts.
