Frederick Hulme was born in Swinton, Yorkshire. He was taught by his mother, a painter on porcelain, and when he moved to London in 1844 he worked as an illustrator and engraver. He specialised in landscape paintings of Surrey and Wales, and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institute from 1852. His painting style is clear and fresh, using strong, vivid colours to capture the scenes before him.
