DIEGO UC STANDS NEXT TO ROCKS ON HIS PROPERTY, 2002-09-02 (photo)

Mexican Mayan farmer Diego Uc stands next to a rustic wall on his property in Hopelchen, in the Yucatan September 2, 2002. Uc was arrested and put in prison for 9 months after using seemingly random rocks to build with on his land. Authorities prosecuted Diego Uc for violating a national monument, as the rocks he had used were in fact part of a pre-Hispanic archaeological site. Uc was never formally informed that he could not use the rocks, which were on his property, and as a poor Mayan farmer, who speaks weak Spanish, was badly equipped to defend himself in court.
