This country farmer is dressed in clothes typical of the early part of the 19th century. A Northumbrian plaid wrap lies at the back of his chair. His clothes are warm and sturdy but not fashionable, and the colours do not match. The careful detail of the picture is characteristic of Thomas Sword Good's style. The light from the side creates definite contrasts of light and shade. This has allowed the artist to bring out the modelling of the face and figure. Good was based in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
