Engraver: James Gillray (1757-1815) Engraving: Progress of the Toilet: The Wig - Plate 2 This engraving belongs to the three-part satirical series 'Progress of the Toilet', intended to pour ridicule on the fashions of the day In this image a woman is sitting reading Delphine, a book by French author Germaine de Staël which scrutinized the restrictions imposed upon women in upper class society. Her maidservant is about to place a wig on her head and on her dressing table are many accoutrements popular with French aristocratic ladies such as ‘Espirit de Lavande’ and’ Huile Antique’.
