German mauser carbine rifle, 7 mm, 1895 model. Manufactured by Deutsche Waffen-Und Munitions Fabriken of Berlin, this rifle was captured by Captain (Brevet Major) E G T Bainbridge, 2nd Battalion The Buffs Regiment, from the Boers and carried by him for the remainder of the Boer War (1899-1902). It is inscribed on the butt, ‘E A Venterdoon’.
