William Gale was a prolific and varied painter of genre and subject pictures, drawing inspiration from English history and literature as well as the Bible and classical mythology. Painting in a pre-Raphaelite manner using a white ground, his early pictures have a jewel-like luminescence. He favoured this type of oval format for single female pictures, and delighted in delicate renditions of sumptuous fabrics, here picking out the intricately embroidered crimson flowers on the young woman's tunic.
