Pub doorway, Chapel Lane, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1933 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "The fine 'period' doorway of the 'Old Market Inn' at the lower (south) end of Chapel Lane. ('33) The cellarage of this house has two bricked up passages dating from the smuggling days; one sealed flush, the other recessed. These were common in this area, but were filled in many years gone by, when the illicit trade in contraband came to an end. See if noted Mr. Lindsay's report of his talk with Kelly on the job of the demolitions in this area. He seems to have been the only worker that spotted and kept a mental note of underground finds. He said to Mr. L. that they picked up some 6ft.or more of one of these passages heading, underground, outside the Inn, in the direction of Cains' no. 4 New Bond St., the Bakers."
