On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Entrance to cellar in yard of 11 Seneschal Lane (1833 in Crown St.) One of the biggest in early Douglas. If this cellar could talk! It extends under the whole house. [inserted note] In Seneschal Lane, on the rise from Smaggs. Entrance to the huge cellar under No 11 Seneschal Lane (top of rise L ) No.11 must have been one of the largest edifices of its date in Douglas. There are stories re the magnificent staircase it once contained, but no details of date or original occupant. Until now, it has never been possible to get a photo of its whole frontage - seven windows. Elsewhere in this series. The cellar engulfed the whole of the superstructure."
