French School. Oil painting on canvas, King Henri II, King of France (1519–1559) (after François Clouet) by French School, 19th century. Full-length portrait of a man, standing, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator. He wears a black-and-gold, striped and belted doublet, with short, bombasted breeches of slashed gold-and-white. His trunk-hose are white and worn with square-toed, low-heeled, white shoes, with pierced decoration and yellow pom-poms. His short, black coat is heavily gold-braided. His black, cockaded cap covers short hair and a small beard frames his chin. His right hand holds gold gloves and his left hand rests on his sword on the left hip. The floor is an olive-green and rust design of squares and semi-circles. The painting is severely damaged by mildew. White catalogue number '98' .
