Image description

Possibly originally intended as a devotional prayer book, this ensemble of forty-four lavishly illuminated leaves in the First Gondarene style features brightly coloured and animated Biblical scenes and depictions of Ethiopian monks, worshippers and saints, including Tekle Haymanot (c.1215–c.1313), an Ethiopian saint who founded a major monastery. The script is written in Ge’ez, an ancient language now used only in a liturgical context, and the original order of the pictures has been lost.
