The "River Clyde." The idea of running the collier River Clyde ashore packed with troops (within sight of the ruins of Troy, where the ancient Greeks had done much the same thing with the Wooden Horse), led to some of the bravest deeds in the Dardanelles Campaign. On 25 April 1915, the River Clyde left the shelter of the fleet, a bridge of barges was to connect her to the shore, but she grounded too far out and the barges swung aside. For pulling them into place under a terrific Turkish fire, Commander Edward Unwin, RN, Midshipmen Drewery and Malleson, and Able Seamen Williams and Samson received the Victoria Cross.
