"Pride's Purge," 1648. In December 1647, Charles I signed at Carisbrooke a secret treaty with the Scots, in which they undertook to invade England and restore him to the throne on certain conditions. The second Civil War broke out in consequence, but Cromwell decisively defeated the Scots at Preston, and Charles now stood alone, his intrigues and double-dealing exposed. Parliament agreed that peace might be obtained by negotiations with Charles. The army, however, determined to "purge" the Parliament of all who might favour the king, Colonel Pride standing in the lobby and detaining all but about fifty members. This remnant became known as the "Rump Parliament." Illustration for one a set of cards on Historical London, issued by Hignett's Cigarettes in 1926.
