Image description

Who was the first king to live at Buckingham Palace? Edward VII was the first king to live at Buckingham Palace, as we know it - he was born and died there. The structure, which has been called "the ugliest royal palace in Europe", stands on a site known as Mulberry Garden, where Charles I tried an experiment in silk cultivation. It was at first Goring House, and George III bought the then brick and stone mansion from the Duke of Buckingham. Nash was responsible for reconstruction, but William IV declined to use it, and the palace was not occupied until Queen Victoria made it the town residence of the Sovereign of the British Empire. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.
