Image description

Painting by Kamal Muhammad and Chand Muhammad (fl.1680s) India, Deccan The Adil Shahi dynasty from Yusuf (r.1490-1510) to Sikandar (r.1672-86) ruled the Sultanate of Bijapur until it fell to Mughal conquerors in 1686 - all nine sultans shown here. Views of water suggest Bijapur’s former vastness including Goa on the Arabian Sea. Isma’il, founder of the Safavid dynasty of Iran, hands a key to Yusuf symbolizing the allegiance of the ‘Adil Shahi family to the Shi’ite creed but during its golden period under the free-thinking Ibrahim II (1579–1626) Bijapur embraced Hinduism and Sufism and in 1583 Sunnism as the state religion.
