Tipped as the latest New World wine craze, Chile's Carmenere red boasts as phoenix-like return to life more than 100 years after it was all but wiped off the map. Carmenere grapes where grown in France's Bordeaux region and other parts of southern Europe in the late 19th century, until a plague, known as phylloxera, devastated many vineyards. Thought to be non-existent in Chile until the mid-1990s, and little known elsewhere, Carmenere is increasingly seen as the South American country's flagship wine, edging its way onto European and U.S. supermarkets.
