Image description

Fasanerie. Translation: Pheasantry. The breeding of the noble pheasant already played a role on the domains of Charlemagne alongside the breeding of peacocks and partridges. In the 11th century the pheasant was mentioned as a monastery meal. The refinement of the food led to the establishment of pheasantries, in which whole families of pheasants are either kept wild (i.e. free) in wooded areas or tame (artificially) in fenced areas. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).
