Vin Mariani (French: Marianis wine) was a tonic and patent medicine created circa 1863 by Angelo Mariani, a French chemist who became intrigued with coca and its economic potential after reading Paolo Mantegazza?s paper on cocas effects. In 1863, Mariani started marketing a wine called Vin Tonique Mariani which was made from Bordeaux wine treated with coca leaves (cocaine). Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Cheret (1836 ? 1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. Here advertising the aperitif, Quinquina Dubonnet, Cheret has drawn on one of his compositional standbys: an attractive and fashionably dressed young woman holding a bottle of the advertised product.
