The print is inscribed, The Property of the Marchioness of Worcester, taken at the Battle of Salamanca by the Marquis, from the Grave of its Master a French Officer, where it was found exhausted & nearly starved to death & was with much difficulty forced away from becoming a sacrifice to its Fidelity. There is also a reference to the picture being painted for H.R.H. Princess Charlotte of Wales. Charlotte (1796-1817) was the only child of King George IV and became an admirer of Sancho.
