SMOKE FROM WILDFIRES COVERS MOUNTAINS AROUND KELOWNA BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2003-08-23 (photo)

After several nights in which wildfires lit up the sky and surrounding mountains with glowing red clouds of smoke and flame, a more serene greeted residents as smoke gathered around the mountains bordering Lake Okanagan and Kelowna, British Columbia, just after sunset August 23, 2003. Cooler temperatures and little wind helped firefighters begin to get a handle on the fires that have destroyed over 200 homes on the southern edges of Kelowna and forced officials to order evacuations of some 30,000 people in the area.
