Bridgeman Images is now representing the Estate of John Miller for copyright, reproduction and licensing
John Miller (1931-2002) is an iconic painter of the Cornish landscape. Born in London, he studied and worked as an architect before relocating to West Cornwall in order to become a full time painter. Working from his studio at the now famous Beach House at Lelant with its magnificent views across the Hayle estuary to Godrevy Lighthouse, John painted his distinctive images of glowing beach and deep blue sky
“I moved to Cornwall from London in 1958 to celebrate a land I had already come to love. Now I am joyful that after forty years of painting, those celebrations of Cornwall are in collections in many parts of the world."
Miller’s art occupies the space between figuration and abstraction. Alongside his passion for art, spirituality was a central theme of both his life and work and he described painting as “an exterior response to an interior vision.” Having considered at one time becoming a monk, he was a committed third order Franciscan and in the early nineties became a lay canon of Truro Cathedral. In 2012 New Craftsman Gallery St Ives presented a celebratory exhibition of Johns work to mark ten years since the artists death in 2002.
